Maple Syrup Festival

So this is a little delayed, but I remembered I did do something earlier this year in the Wakarusa area that is fun for families, though it is seasonal. I unfortunately didn't take a lot of pictures, but the Wakarusa Maple Syrup Festival happens in April (28-30) and has lots of activities.

1-3 Y/O bounce house

The biggest attraction, aside from the bounce houses, is the usual festival food. The big ruckus is a staple in festivals around northern Indiana and was found this last year in the food area. The stand is Nelson's, a chicken stand known for its fantastic potatoes.

I opted for Greek, and regretted it as my wallet was quickly relieved of $8 for just a Gyro. But I had no regrets about the $6 giant strawberry lemon shake up I got, refills included. It's a bit pricey, but you won't find a good one for much less than that, and I loved every second, even after two out of three munchkins relieved me of a good portion of it.

The stands weren't much to talk about, but this last year they had a big blow up area with lots of fun activities for kids (I believe under the age of 10). We spent a good amount of our time buying tickets (usually one ticket per attraction) and running around to the different slides and bouncy attractions. The kids had a blast and spent over an hour for roughly $6. This was definitely one of the better parts of the fair itself.

The Dime Store, one of the fun spots of the area (sadly nothing is 10 cents anymore), has a free mechanical pony ride. While it is a candy store, it's not your typical. It has a wide variety of candies and even a consignment store attached.

If the fair food is not your style, there is a big pancake breakfast the 29th, though we went to it and found it lacking. For all the talk about Maple Syrup, this was certainly not even maple flavored syrup. The pancakes were a bit too dense for my taste and the sausage was dry. Honestly, not worth $8 entry.

All in all, I'd give the fair 7/10 for fun (mostly redeemed by the bouncy houses) and 5/10 for affordability (but most fairs are this way).
